Mass Produced Plate

I've recently begun looking into getting some pieces of plate armor and I've noticed that there are a lot of sites out there that have nearly the exact same inventory with very similar prices (bytheswordinc.com, museum replicas, dark knight armory). I'm assuming that the "functional plate armor" from these sites are mass produced. I've been unable to locate any sort of review for these products.

Has anyone purchased these armors? What kind of quality are they? I've always heard that plate armor has to be custom fit or it's worse than useless. Mass produced stuff seems like it would be worthless, and the price has me wondering if it's too good to be true.

If you are going to be live steel. I probably wouldn't use them.

If you are going to be playing in a larp game, I would caution you against mass produced metal armours. They are not fitted to your body and can hurt you if you fall or run into another player. I have been making armour for LARPs, SCA and collectors for over 20 years and I can not tell you the number of mass produced pieces I have modified or re-worked to prevent more "armour bites" from occuring. If you are playing a LARP, then I would recommend trying impact resistant plastic armours, we make them for our game and the look is perfect, they don't rust, are light weight and are generally easier to make. if you need patterns or advice you can contact me at sorrowskeep@yahoo.com.
