Yup nice job Shade.

Can you change the "2004 Awards" link on the main menu so that it links to the voting page?

Righto, good to see this live.

Excellent job???

What, exactly, has a photo of a two year old of indeterminate sex in fancy dress have to do with LARP. A two year old who's submitter freely admits isn't allowed to participate in LARP events.

How did the all high and mighty committee come to select this photo?
Please tell me it was something, anything, other than some half-arsed 'fluffy bunnies' sentimentality.

This photo will probably win, thereby making a mockery of the category. The fact that it wins does not make it's inclusion right.
(Analogy of man with machinegun entering boxing match)

Before anybody asks, I am bitter and twisted, but this doesn't make me wrong.

Apart from that, bloody good job. Loads of fantastic kit, costume etc. Any of which would be worthy winners.

Take that stick out of your arx or better yet, stuck a gerbil there so you will know what real pain is... If you can't get the joke, just kiss my hairy ***.

And the excellent job was for Shade for organizing the event, right?

Sorry Jupe, had a quick look at the discussion about the aspirations of the Shadies, couldn't find any reference to it being a joke. Apart from the vitriol, a well reasoned and cogent post though, which I feel has done a great deal to justify picture 5's inclusion.

Oh, sarcasm is a great tool... Why are you whining now, not before? You addmitted yourself that you are one of those bitter and twisted persons, I bet you take yourself and life little too seriously. That kind bickering makes me mad, which was seen in my last message.

We don't need to justify the picture five. It justified itself by being cool. And the one who send the picture was honest. How can we know that any one of these pictures is from a larp and not a set up? If it looks like LARP it is LARP. And I would allow that child in my game, so what's the harm?

Next year, if I take part in Shadies, I will personally send you signed testimonies that these pictures are LARP related.

It's not away from anyone. So ... up yours, until later.

Apparently, Horace, you found one of Jupe's hot buttons. As far as justifying the inclusion of #5, that would be impossible without getting input from everyone of the selection committee. Suffice it to say that the volunteer selection committee gave the picture a majority vote for inclusion. That's about all the justification I can give, since I didn't personally vote for it.

I would recommend that instead of you and Jupe continuing this charming banter on a public forum, you each move your future attacks and provocations to private messages, and that Horace volunteer to join the committee for next year. That way he can be included in the discussion about which pictures should be included where and not have any questions once it's done.

Yeah, I apologize for my bad behaviour. I am hot tempered. I still don't regret anything I said, but instead am very sorry about the publicity of these words.

Personally I find the LARP Dude/Babe categories unnecessary, but the majority of people were for them when categories were being decided, so they were included. The same goes for the kid. And in fact, the whole competition. It's a public vote, and as such it's open to public whims.

The selection committee is far from high and mighty, we are just volunteer representatives of the wider LARP public whose job is to cull the submissions down to a manageable selection and move or remove inappropriate entries. No-one in the committee actively opposed the kid photo. That's probably representative of the attitude of the public, given the way the votes are going. In my opinion the fact that the kid photo is so popular demonstrates that the committee did it's job in representing the public during the narrowing-down process.

A mockery will be made of a category called "LARP Dude"? Wink

Thanks mate. I reckon there are a few things we can improve for next year, but I think the fundamental concept is a winner, and we're all very glad that Shade put in the hard yards to make it happen. There's a lot of work going on behind the scenes, so you'll have to forgive us if we seem self-congratulatory now that it's live.

Ryan, completely agree that the concept is sound, Shade et al have done a good job in getting it off the ground.

I still don't like the kid photo inclusion though, and like I said, it winning doesn't make it's inclusion right.

Maybe there should be a new category...LARP kid, then all of the fluffy bunnies sentimentalists can go 'AAAAH isn't he just the cutest' to a whole bunch of photos. (I'm joking, before someone decides to go all vitriolic and abusive - again. This seems to happen quite a lot with my posts on this site.)

HoraceCope. If you had this kind of opinion prior to the Shadies voting by the jury, why did you not say anything? It's so easy to be high and mighty after the vote has been cast. If you would just read the concept of the photo contest, you would understand that this time, winning really makes the damn thing right.

Your machinegun example : This is not a boxing match. This is "free for all, no weapons restricted" match and your boxer just brought his gloves. Bad for him.

Sorry about the comment, but if Horace can insult "someone", I can respond.

EDIT :
btw. reason for my burst of anger. I really hate when people start playing high and mighty when they would have had the chance to participate. If you don't use the chance, don't weep. I also hate people who mask their bitterness behind "I am more civilized than thou" attitude. I might be a barbarian, but that's my choice, not to do with my lack of intelligent, education or manners. And, even though said in blind rage, I meant every word of that first message and I still do. You have shoved the mother of all sticks up your arx and this is why you wrote that message. Maybe some moderator will terminate this message that I'm writing now and I'm Ok with it. But this is my opinion and yes, It's nearing personal if you continue this fight. I tried to stop. I apologized my behaviour. Not the message, but the rage that it was written, I admit that, but it was still a peace offering.

And no, I don't like fluffy things. But compared to those four others, the little guy was a winner. He has a good attitude and I bet that the one who sent that pic did understand "the joke" and had a good sense of humour.

WRONG!
LARP Dude/Babe is very necessary! As the creator of these catagories (mostly the babe catagory I could really care less about the dude catagory.) I feel it is a good thing to show attractive chicks playing LARPs. I have been told by more than one person that did not know I LARPed that LARP people were unbathed fat thick glass wearing people who call out lighting bolt multiple times (refering 2 the web movie). While that describes me minus the glasses and plus a bath and not female I feel it is necessary to let sex sell the idea. There are many attractive people playing LARPs these days. The LARP being mostly a male pasttime why not let the nicer looking females attract a larger crowd.

I have met one of the superfine nerd LARP babes and she told me she loved the attention of the LARP guys. She used to date jocks. Now she only dates Gamer/LARPer guys.

The point!

The catagory is a great catagory! Your just mad cause that little kid beat you in boffer combat! Wink Laughing

The good job was specifically for Shade for organizing this huge undertaking.

Jupe - Horace Cope has a very tenuous grasp on reality. He was the one who accused us all of censorship. He also refused to pony up and help. It so much easier to bitch from the outside.

If being taken at a LARP event is a requirement - which would be tough to prove or verify - than I'll attest to that the picture #5 in LARP Dude was taken at a LARP event. I know the group and have seen the entire roll of film from the event in question. Also, the picture was not submitted as a joke as far as I know. (Note - I didn't vote for that picture to advance and am not a fan of minors in LARPing in any form.)

But either way - shut it - HC.

To Eldrad - I'm with Ryan, the inclusion of LARP Babe is kind of sexist and not the best possible presentation to promote LARPs. I think (and have posted) that it would have been better to go with Best Costume Male and Best Costume Female. Not only does it remove the sexism but it keeps the Oscar feel and separates make-up to its own (IMHO, neccesary) category.

To Jupe - Stop apologizing!!!

To HC - Shut it!!!

To Shade - Well, done. I keep reading about people talking about great costuming and how they intend to put forth more effort at their LARPs.

Bill
