Post subject: Boring dress concept to change
Hi, I need a dress I want to use for a noblewoman, but I want it to be usable in more roles of ritcher ladies. I have this grey fabric I bougt some time ago and it fits me fantastically, I figured out it would go well with purple.
So I made this picture of it, the model has aproximately my built:
http://photos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs001.snc3/10833_1079826016276_1845069322_154579_6805813_n.jpg
It looks a bit flat as I resigned on shading and at most drapery, but to get the idea - the grey is boring, though it brings out my (real) eyes and hair well. The purple doesent save anything as I hoped. I originally thought of having black instead of silver, but it looked too old-like.
I'm thinking of using satin for the purple parts, I heard the wrong side of it looks similar as one type used in baroque era, so I'd only use the right side of it on the bodice, the wrong side on the skirt and sleeves - it is lighter shaded than the right side and has a slight shimmer to it. This may help to have it more interesting, but I can't really draw it that way, so it would be risky.
The grey part of the sleeve is to be attached to the wrist by a decorative "bracelet", a matching jewel is to be worn on the neck and in the hair, but I don't have an idea about those yet.
It would be laced in the back. The front lacing is just decorative, The point of the bodce is lined with silver embrodeiry as most of the bodice, but the ends of the false lacing are attached over it so it may seem that they alone form the point from the picture. It is not to be so.
I'm going to wear a baroque-like corset with un-period bust shaping and support that would please the modern eye more than the original underneath - it is fantasy, not history.
The LARP I'm going to wear it has no set period, so I guess I should simply look representative enough. I have less than a year to complete it.
What would you change? How can I make it more interesting? I'd think dark wax pearls, lace... But there is nowhere to put it in my opinion.

I know the history buffs will tear you apart. But if you're playing teh role of a noble or ruling noble.. Most likely ruling noble. Then you wouldn;t have a problem with the purple. The grey does make it look umm too plain for a noble. Unless they grey is like has a design to it. a Brocade of some sort. And don't forget to wear the bling of nobility.

I know the greatest problem are the sleeves. This is slightly alternated:
http://photos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs021.snc3/10833_1080035061502_1845069322_154878_4316275_n.jpg
It's not very visible, but from the elbow down the sleeves are ment to be full circle with the "hole" for the arm decentralized and positioned near one side. This type of sleeves is absolutely "out" and doesen't even attempt to hold with the "outer and inner dress" appearance, but it certainly looks less plain.
The jewel is to be made from excess purple fabric overlayed with black straight lace, with a silver oval in the center, silver chains and larger purple beads or false pearls. The rest of the lace I have is to be used to hold the tight sleeves in place in a completely ahistoric fashion.
I thought of some light abstract embrodiery either in white or purple on some parts (like, extremely light/ missing in the bottom part of the skirt and being thickest towards the top)
Some people disagree with my idea of costuming, but I think history and fantasy had (would have) different conditions. Think of just of the female role, and there is a lot more concerning religion etc. This gives me more freedom in concept in my opinion. Sure, also lets me get further astray as well sometimes.
I'm not as good as I'd like, but this is a very proto - version. I haven't had the "inspiration part" yet with this, so I'm still like throwing random parts of ideas to the design to have something to build on when I get it. I mean, as long as I'm not using modern fabrics, recent fashion and things like zippers (even "invisible" count) and have some idea about it I thing I'm OK.
On a side note, I think I will persuade a friend to be my maid, so she'd speed up the dressing.

Yet another version. In this case, with my proportions, padding in the hip area would be neccesary as even with all the curviness I have sholders wider than hips. This is barely noticeable, but detailing in the shoulder area?

I'm going to keep this very brief as my mind is having a hard time keeping a single thought right now.
1) Pick colors and a style that flatter you
2) I'd pick a style that's fairly simple, allowing an easier ability to recycle the dress for future characters.
3) Use accessories to add complexity and depth to the outfit. This allows you to easier customize the dress for other characters.
Beyond that, it's really what you want and what you want to be wearing. If you need some other dress ideas try searching eBay, Etsy, Merchant's Guild auction site and other popular sites like Renstore.com and MuseumReplicas.com.

Well if this is close to an elizabethan style dress with some glaringly obvious deviations.. I would use a bum roll. Which would make it seem like you have a large rear end as it were. But makes the skirt part flare out. Kinda like a man o war ship. ]:0). As I have heard what the noble ladies and courtesans referred to. I think you will do fine.

I forgot one important thing with the dress - no mater how I love purple, how it suits me in general, dark shades are an instant aging solution - they add like 15 years to me. I need a dark shade not to look fairy-like.
So, instead of looking mystical in purple, I'll look like an ice queen with royal blue. It goes well with blondes, even though it's not my favorite color (but still better than green or brown). My in game husband is a great fan of blue/silver/black combination, so at least we'd have similar color schemes.
Yes, I know that bum rolls were used (unsure about the name as some costuming words in my language are a bit weird, including this one). I just never thought I'd wear one myself, with my 14" hip-waist difference. In some dresses I look like wearing it already. But with so much satin on my already large bust and such sleeves, I'd need it to look balanced. At least my waist would be really dramatic.

Once you get it done. Take pics. And let us know how it went.

That will take some time, but I'll post something once it's ready. At least you can point out things needing change. As I said, I have over a year, now I have exams comming, so don't expect anything sooner than in March.

No worries. I can wait. But excited to know how the dress turns out.
