The new blade shape looks like a big improvement, at least in terms of appearance.

I love these latex weapons, but I have always seen a small fault. Many gamers simply cannot afford them, so they make their own. And while not nearly as pretty, they function just fine. Now, those that can afford them get an advantage and disadvantage of them.

Advantage....Speed. They are very light, and lightning quick. And appealing.
Disadvantage....Too light to parry anything with any substantial weight. And cost.

wolfdruid67, You should read the topic again Wink

Calimacil are not Latexweapons. since no latex is used in the production.

Calimacil is heavier than latexweapons, not lighter....
So they are actually very good at parrying other weapons... but is somewhat slower.

Price:
Its a fact that american larpers in generel are not willing to spent much money on their equipment, costumes and weapons...
Not compared to the canadians, Germans or danes at least...

At the last larp I organized (krigslive V) our post-larp survey indicated that each person spent 450 USD on equipment solely for this larp.
Then add expences for the larp, travel ect... The 450 players spent about 610USD each in total on this larp...)

I am sorry, I was not trying to be insulting in the least. I do spend a great deal on my gear, it was a general statement I was making...as I am sure yours was.

You were right, I did not read the full article..but I am now so I am not misinformed.

And yes, you are right, gear like that would be much better. I think I missed cost in general..is there a price range?
Have you tried stabbing with the new point shape?
Yes...
Please note that I only just got one of the weapons with the new blade... so I can't say anything about longterm durability.

the old Diamont blade:
If Iam stabbing against a person wearing a breastplate I sometimes put my full strenght behind a stab... and the tip can take it without any problems. (and the breastplate makes sure that the target don't get any bluemarks... but still notice the hit)

The new blade:
You can still stab. Since the tip is a bit longer it bends a bit, and I think this absorbs more of the force behind a stab compared to the old blade...
But I think the durability is a bit "less good" because of it... but Iam guessing...
Iam sure that the guys did a lot of testing with the prototypes of the blade and if the durebility was a lot worse then they would not have started to sell it...

wolfdruid67:
Don't worry I didn't take it as an insult... and yes it was a general statement.

Since I never bin to an american larp I don't "Know" anything...
Just basing it on opservations on this forum, on the film/pictures I have seen from defrent american larps...

And you could say that generelising about larpers is basicly pretty stupid... I have no Idea how may larpers there are in the US... but we are about 3500 registred larpers here... and we have huge defrences...
(registred=members of clubs that are a member of our national union)
(But a survay made at the top of the LoTRs wave showed that we had about 30.000 larpes back then... its less now)

I do know that when Calimacil hear "you weapons are to expensive" it often comes from an american...
The Canadians are use to paying for latexswords... the germans are use to pay for brandts like Forgottens dreams... We danes are use to Palnatoke...

But Its my teory that the % of "equipment/gear facists" is a bit less in the US than here i denmark.

We have many larpers who allso do medival/viking reenactment... and their very high requriments for their gear influences the generel standard.

("equipment facists"= larpers who think everybody should only use wool and linen. armour should be gauge 16 or better, and unless the fantasysetting clearly state othervise you should do things the "historically" way)

I think that americans who focus a lot on the clothes, gear ect. is natually drawn to reenactments. (ACW, AWI...)

But as I said abowe.. Iam just guessing.

Yes, I agree with what you have said. The one thing that I noticed in abroad LARPS is the clothing and weapons.

I have been looking at video online, and I have noticed it seems to be more of a battle scenario system.... Is that true? I ask, because the game I run, and the game I am trying to get going in other cities is much more based on Questing and Roleplaying....where players also choose to be the monsters for us...fairly epic stuff.

I think people vary everywhere. Some people here are very very crafty when it comes to clothing...where others are in sweat pants and a tunic...lol.

I've gotten a chance to play around with quite a few Calimacil blades in the recent past. We had a group go in on them and buy up a 10 blade lot or so.

Just me personally these are my feelings on the blades.

The pros:

-I really like the outward appearance. They just look awesome.
-They feel good in the hand. The handle feels solid.
-The blades are damn near indestructible. Solid construction.
-Stab proof. You can plunk someone in full plate pretty damned hard and you wont rip through and core them.
-The cost. Not a bad price for what you are getting, especially for the detail work.

The cons:

-Along with being indestructible the "rubbery" blade can be a bit hard when you are struck with it.
-The longer weapons are "whippy". I don't know how the new design does, but with the old one, especially the behemoth 2-handers, there was an issue with the blade whipping. Not a real problem, but coupled with the very firm rubberish blade I ended up pulling the long one's for safety reasons before they hit the field. (we error way more heavily on the side of caution than we should sometimes)

So yeah, AWESOME construction, they look great, and have an awesome price. The bigger swords are a bit whippy (or their old design was) but outside of that they are solid and long lasting weapons that really help with the immersion of a great game.

I had my face busted open with a Calimacil weapon. Right above my left eye along the orbit. Opponent charged, I got a block up but still took the hit and got popped in the face. Yes head is a legal target in the game I was playing, and I have been hit in the face with other weapon: from homemade boffer to specialty latex, and padded arrows at short distances (3 meters) and none of them opened me up.

They look good but I don't think any game I know allows them now. Just thought I'd drop my 2¢

We have many Calimacil weapon reviews on www.youtube.com/larpcraft. We love em but ya... they are performance blades not full contact blades. Wish the blade paint lasted longer but still far better feel over a lightweight latex weapons.
