Post subject: KungFu LARPs do they exist?
Hey, I'm in the DC Metro area in MD and I'm certain there arent any around here, but do they exist any where else at all?
Like instead of LARPs similar to Lord of the Rings, are there any that would be more like say... StormRiders? or for those less familiar with Hong Kong films, Croutching Tiger Hidden Dragon or the new one House of the Flying Daggers...
obviosly it would be impossable to role play the whole wire-fu aspects of it, but boffer sword play and padded kung-fu mixed with a fantasy chinese setting and katta/verbal based magic attacks would still be alot of fun. Or atleast I think so.
ok, so I've given up that they exist around me, but do they exist ANYWHERE?? And if not, is this the kind of thing that folks might be interested in, should I decide to try and start one?

Legend of the Five Rings has some LARPs on the west coast of the US I think. Thats not kung fu though. That's feudal Japan style in a fantasy world. I'm sure kung fu larps exist and if they don't they freakin should. I spose it might be cool to base one on Mortal Kombat.

That sounds cool, but I'm really looking to enfuse martial arts with LARP. This, of course, would NOT be for the types of players that use such skills as "Perfect aim" and "Dodge".
So if I start something like this up is there anyone in the MD/VA area that would be interested in playing? or even co-running and developing?

Well, some of my coGMs practice martial arts, so they might be up for playing. While I can think of three martial arts larps that have been run in the DC area, they were all in the 1990s and all used simulated combat (cards/dice/rps) rather than actual martial arts.
However, you may want to consider coming to Intercon Mid-Atlantic in Timonium, Maryland this fall and pitching your idea there. Intercon is an eclectic larp convention and people there are always interested in something different.

How would you resolve combat? by making players do real kung-fu (which, if everyone is a kung-fu practitioner wouldn't be a problem since they know how to fall and such and have sport insurance), or with some degree of simulation (even small, like hit points)?
'cause with the first option, you make a heavy restriction on who is ABLE to play and who is not. But yet, it's not a bad thing, when you want to make a very specific LARP.

Well, that's a sticky wicket I'm afraid. if I go with strictly practicioners then I limit an already small resource pool. And if I go with the point thing, then do I make my kungfu guys feel stupid?
I think if I were to start such a thing I would have combat be weapons based with minimal hit points to the body. (1 limbs, 2 torso) and unarmed combat would follow 3 point sparring rules, but only those that are found "worthy" by the combat master are allowed to fight in that manner.
Magic wouldn't use any spell packs or components. Instead you would have to perform mini (documented possably w/ additional verbal incantation) katas, if the kata is disrupted then the chi is used but no effect. no projectile magics, the magic is funneled into your next attack, so it's up to you to land it. I imagine that the higher the level one is, the less complex the basic spells get.
