Okay, Hello. The names Kai.

I've been in a few LARP type things, and frankly I need some assistance, especially from those in ohio.

I've Played Ohioliveadventure( www.Ohioliveadventure.org). Which was beautiful. It's a great yearly game focusing on Role Play and Character interaction. With boffer weapons of course to settle heated disputes and for the oh so essential fights. It was so great. But I am having a problem finding the same beautiful mixture of In character acting and being active.

The only thing around me is an Amtgard 'shire'. My problem with Amtgard is that it is almost entirely combat.... actually it is entirely combat. Of course they try to add in the elements of roleplaying loosely, but it never seems to work out. Especially with the players that just go there to swordfight looking at you like your an idiot for dramatically falling to the ground, or threatening to cut someone down for not showing you respect in a group melee when there on your team. The events are just drunken parties with a few battlegames sprinkled in. Fun, but definitely not ROLE PLAYING.

So I was wondering, What are some groups/games you think are worth travelling for? I'm in the boonies of NW ohio(Tiffin to be precise)

I would love to hear more about NERO, WoD/Minds Eye and etc.

Though, SCA is out of the question.

Essentially I want to be around other mature people who will go in character and STAY THERE. I'm talking backgrounds, heated discussions and motives for fighting. You know, ROLE PLAY. You could be the sweetest person out of game, but in game your an arrogant womanizing mage.

I've seen TOO MUCH FIGHTING. I love Boffer combat, but I don't want mindless skirmishes. Though I would support fighting in huge scale battles. That would be fun.

So anyone in Ohio(or maybe near border Indiana/Michigan) know of any immersive games?

I can't provide any answers, because I'm on a different continent!

However, I'm fascinated by the Ohio larp you linked to. Could to tell us more about it?

Ohio Live Adventure is a pleasure to attend. I have been LARPing for 20 years, and have visited well over 35 LARPS, and OLA falls into my top five experiences. It is invite only, but if you are a days drive or less from Ohio, put in the foot work to go. You will not find a better time. Shame they are only once a year.

They need to allow latex weapons though Smile, but hey, no one is perfect.

I enjoyed myself so much I would run full speed through trees to get back there [inside joke].

OLA is truely unique. Rather hard (for me, anyway) to explain.

Imagine the in depth roleplay of a non combat theatre LARP, But with the added fact you have an entire camping area to yourself and can break off on your own to scour the land at any time with sword in hand. Everything character wise is Freeform. No character sheets or limitations(unless you look to be godlike), Incrediably open ended gameplay.

My group(Some really bad theives/Rogues) had an entire unscripted, spur of the moment dispute/subplot with the barbarians all through the night. But thats shouting insults and camping in-game for ya, Haha.

Cheif, Was that you who ran through the Trees? lol.

I think I was spoiled, OLA 2003 was my first LARP.

It sounds great. Is it unplotted, then? There's a few games in the UK with that kind of feel, although the ones I'm familiar with usually have a simple rule system. But usually there to fall back on, should roleplay not be enough on it's own. Instead of the focus.

I haven't been to one that's as trust-based as that, but I imagine, with the right people, that it must be something special.

Shame about the boffers Very Happy

While i tend to disagree with OLA's opinion that other LARPs are "simulating a simulator", the game does look like it is interesting to play. If you want something that freeform, then sure, you are going to have to intensly scrutinize whoever wants to come play.
Totally subjective games dont seem like they would be my cup of tea, but then again I guess you cant knock it till you try it. I find that there is nothing wrong with having objective rules to handle combat and other things. They only really slow you down when you are first learning, but after that they become second nature. But, to each his own...

A possibility for you, if you don't mind a bit of travel. We're a soon-to-start LARP focusing on RP, and then combat. We do have a rules sys, which we're currently playtesting. We expect to go live sometime in the spring/summer.

www.triumphlarp.com

The name of the game is Triumph.

That was my camp you guys ended up fighting in that night Smile If OLA was a monthly LARP I'm not sure I would go for the free form character thing. However, since the game is once a year anyhow it works out well.
