Pfft. If anyone is making a big mess it's the idiots running for the GOP. Then you will see a big mess.

In Germany we have cheap health care for everybody an we all pay a little bit for it.

I don`t call it "socialism" i called ist "logical needing" in a modern society.

Frostie unfortunately here in the states. Alot of people GOP mostly think that universal healthcare is a form of communism or some stupid thing. Which makes me laugh. It's sad when one demonises something that is good. Like if it works for teh rest of teh world it can;t work here.. Umm yeah.

Frostie. to me. No Germany is not communistic. But to some it is if it's universal healthcare. Don;t ask me why they think that. But for whatever airheaded reason. That's what they think.

Coming into this a day late and a dollar short, but what the heck.

Not going to comment on US politics, as from finnish point of view the most leftist-hippie-nut US congressman is a raving ultra-right-wing plutocrat... Very Happy

But on public healthcare, I have this to say.

In high school, my shoulder started getting dislocated. It would pop back in on its own, but it was a bit of a hassle. I put up with it for a long time, until it forced me to basically take clerk duties during my conscription term (a cushy job, I admit!).

It wasn't until I managed to throw it off during a day at work until I finally got around to admitting it really was getting worse.

I went to the public healthcare system here in Finland. First, in the ER, I got my shoulder reset (and some pretty nice painkillers). Then I got a piece of paper that told me to see an orthopedic doctor at my local hospital. He basically told me he'll fix my arm, as soon as I get through waiting in the line, as my situation was not particularly time-critical (and I actually wanted to postpone the op until after Christmas rush at work). I got some preliminary MRI scan etc. done and into the waiting list I went.

So, year and a half ago in February I went back to that hospital, checked in for day-surgery, took my meds, counted backwards from 100...

After installing three clamps to re-tighten my completely busted-up shoulder cartilage they let me wake up, stoned as a skunk on painkillers and anesthesia, and off I went for six weeks of post-op recovery paid medical leave. Into hospital by 8am, back home before 5pm.

My bills for this entire debacle? About 100€ for the day-in surgery, some more for meds. If I had been unemployed, I would have qualified for assistance on those fees, basically paying nothing.

Now, my shoulder is better then new, completely recovered with very capable post-op care and checkups.

So, I'd have to argue that at least in my case, public healthcare did work!

(Oh, and by the way, I had medical insurance from work, but as it happens complex orthopedic surgery is only really done in public hospitals in Finland...)
