We are a group of Larp designers with each of us having multiple larps both played and made under our belts.
Our goal is to create a universal set of larp rules so moving from one larp to another doesn´t involve relearning how to do everything.
We know from the start that this is not going to apeal to everyone everywhere and are simply looking for the widest possible appeal for a single set of rules.
No matter how much experience you have, your opinion would be valued greatly and help to create the best possible game.
please give us a look if you are interested

Take a look at Rules To Live By
http://www.interactivitiesink.com/larps
I´ll be interested in seeing how your system works both for the people who are fanatically anti-boffer |

Each system has a niche, our goal is for those using boffers in fantasy.
WOD by WW has the vampire market locked in pretty good
Someone else can work on the sci fi stuff, it´s a small group anyway, although I would love to try one.
I havn´t met a heavy weapon group yet that I would define as a true Larp, amtgaurd is probably closest, but still falls short on the development side. |

Hi it is me! At home alone no wife and kids! YEAH! bored bored
Amtgard is a LACS not a LARP. It has not enough flexibility to be universal.
Something more hit point and skill based would be better for a universal system.

| there are some that call the SCA a larp, just not people in the SCA, amtgaurd is alot closer to a larp than that, I was perhaps being too general in my calling certain styles of games larps |

Favourite quote from your boards:
"...when a five year old wraps a towel around his neck, hold his arms up, and runs, pretending to fly, it´s cute. When a 20-year-old does it, it just looks silly.
And that´s why low fantasy makes the best LARP."
Bam! Hole in one.

A Live Action Combat System
They will usually have elements of history or fantasy but are A rule system made for mostly combat.

Right. In that case I agree with Der Une.
I see it more as a continuum, with the SCA and other groups that have less of an emphasis on roleplaying at one end of the scale, and roleplaying-heavy games at the other end.
They´re all pretty similar sorts of things, with more in common than there is separating them. And I´d throw in pen-and-paper games too. No point in splitting hairs in my opinion. It´s all playing "pretend".

Well
I agree with you both Ryan and Eldrad,
"I see it more as a continuum, with the SCA and other groups that have less of an emphasis on roleplaying at one end of the scale, and roleplaying-heavy games at the other end. "
There´s nothing wrong with Amtgard, in my opinion it seems a bit , well if you ever roleplayed RhyDin in AOL you´d know what I mean.
The idea of playing any character you want from any time or realm is cool but can reak havoc on plot (that is if they ever have any, i dont relaly know).
But they are a LACS, again just seperation it is all pretend in the end, but like the geek flowchart showed us...us LARP´ers are in the middle, hahaha.
bah off topic...

I gave the Rules to Live By a once over. I can sum up my thoughts on the system in one word:
Dice.
I'd rather have rock/paper/scissors.
And, yes, JKB's five year old pretending to fly argument is a classic.

A universal larp system,
dunno. I think it's almost a bad thing. It'd be like WotC making their "D20" system
And then everyone else using it. Sure it's nice and things go over nicely but think about it, Why are larps different ? (not only genre and such) their game mechanic system!
Then there'd have to be a "open license" for the ULS since then everyone would have to use it to be universal, again like the D20 system.
Sounds good on paper, but not in real life.
Anyone else think about this way? _________________ Letting players live shows the GM has s sense of humor.. |

of course the intent is for open license, true open license not that D20 junk with the you can't print this or that and you must add content, If you want to reprint the entire rules fine, if you want to use them as is fine. Our goal is to commonize a Larp system that falls in line with what most systems already use and suggest improvements where the experience of nearly 100 rules systems and dozens of players and admins from as many systems as will step up can give us.
The system apears to be moving along the lines of a flexible power scale, and magic-real life ratio, so if you want to run it as high fantasy you can, if you want to run it low fantasy you can, if you want fast player advancement, or slow just adjust a single factor in each category and poof you are done.
in a manner simmilar to D20 we don't belive for a second that every game will suddenly switch to this system, we just hope that this system allows for it to be easier to switch from game to game, and to allow for games to merge to form larger games if they want.
So many of the game systems out there follow simmilar thinking in how they are run anyway that this will make little difference than to formilize the "standard " rules that the plurality of Larps use anyway.
The system will not be boffer/latex dependant, as a matter of fact we intend to make the combat system flexable enough to add in laser guns light sabres and non physical combat if the system being used warrents it.
many of us have desgined/played in systems that use rules that would not work outside of the plot/world view of the system being used and when using the ULS you take the pieces that work for you and discard the rest, for example in a "players are divine beings" campaign it would be necessary to develop a well defined and far more complex religious magic system, so you drop the section on magic and plug in the rest as you see fit. |

I could argue either way on whether or not a ULS is a good idea.
But, for me, thats the point.
I love game creation. Hashing out rules that are simple and all inclusive is a great mental exercise.
I don't really play all that often anymore - in any game - my standards have gotten too high. The excuse to get together twice a year and playtest a ULS with other top end LARPers is like a sirens call.

What about us Finns? We are going from Rules to No Rules playing, like our meat raw (off-game) and fights full-contact... I myself have written about ten different systems for different games. How can you create an ULS when you play WOD, cyberpunk, CoC, generic fantasy LRPG? Cyberarm with wolvers + SMG, fireball and fear generated by Mythos monster in same system??? What about magic? It works differently in different worlds? _________________ Very few rules, very good games and ... Awesome food. |
