Hello

I just registered myself today after playing a LARP. I come from the airsoft community and I usually play military mission simulations or combat. I just want to inform you of where a I come from to get a better perspective of my comfort zone. Wink

I played a survival Zombie game this weekend at night. The people that acted out the Zombies REALLY acted out their role. At 1 am in a pitch black field field being attack by Zombies... is a special rush for someone the is more familiar with classic warfare combat tactics and encounters.

My question to all of you in the different communities.

Does anyone LARP in a SCI-FI type of environment?

Thank you

Interesting. That would be fun.

Anyone know of anything closer to home... Province of Quebec in Canada?

There are some Star Trek and Star Wars LARPs over here in Germany, for example - or Battlestar Galactica based on the latest TV series.

f. e.

Star Trek (Germany):
http://www.starfleet-operations.de/galerie.html - Links to quite a few pages of Star Trek LARP pictures from the Starfleet Operations community

BSG9 (Germany):
http://www.twelve-colonies.de/ with some pictures here - http://www.twelve-colonies.de/galerie.html - just click on the links to the different events or "Charaktere" (characters) or "Requisiten" (props).

One WH40k-LARP site in France: http://www.deathuntodarkness.org/about.html

Regrettably, I have not found anything about SciFi LARPs in Quebec. Then again, You do have http://www.bicolline.org/ - which looks most impressive if You are into 'historical fantasy'.

I used to co-run an airsoft larp called Nexus, here in England. We ran for about 5 years, maxing out at 60 people onsite (including crew) - sadly, it never grew further, and Nik, the creator and main organiser, had to give it up for financial reasons.

The game was post apocalyptic, focused on a small settlement of survivors in a savage world - the usual, as you can guess. But it was good, lots of interesting roleplay. We issued the BBs for the guns ingame, and the players used it as currency, although we did have "dollars" printed up, with our faces instead of US presidents. I still have those on the shelf in front of me as I type this. One of my favourite aspects of the game was that we have wooden crates with food tokens attached, and each player had to hand in a food token after each event, or start out with injuries at the next event! It gave a very realistic feel to the events.

Now, it's become much more acceptable to combine airsoft and larp in the UK, probably because of barriers we broke, but it never worked out for us! We literally had offensive messages posted on forums, claiming that we were lying when we said that we could roleplay and use airsoft weapons! It was hilarious, because airsoft guns are just a way of resolving combat - they don't change the way people roleplay. Still, great times that I'll never forget.

The problem was the airsofters thought the larpers were a bit soft, and the larpers thought the airsofters were stupid gunbunnies. The first event was wierd, everyone was there the night before to camp and have a social - it was literally larpers on one side of the room, and airsofters on the other. By the end of the event, you couldn't tell who was who!

The only thing the airsofters really had trouble with at first was pacing themselves - being used to a day of play broken up into 1 hour games, they would run up every hill, and down every corridor, and laugh at the larpers as they plodded along. Of course, 12 hours later, with 2 hours to go before the day ended, the larpers were *still* plodding along, and the airsofters were almost comatose

The airsoft hobby now seems to have embraced a more "roleplay" orientated style, with continuous play events that last all weekend, and people playing non-combatant villagers and so on - that's proper mil-sim in my mind. Very Happy

Even here, where there are lots of larps, there are fewer sci-fi and modern larps, and of those, there are only a handful of airsoft larps. People use a range of methods, like nerf guns, cap guns, "point and click" style ranged combat and laser tag, but I don't think any compare to the fast, simple pace of airsoft.

One thing I've always wanted to do is a Mars larp, where everyone has to wear red safety glasses, to colour the world around them!

What about taking one of the Laser tag type systems and creating a LARP around that? Preferably one that has the gun and the sensor all in one.

Laser tag systems tend to be expensive, especially if you need to kit everyone out with them...

We use airsoft, for practical reasons.

I've run 6 part nordic post-apocalyptic larp campaign here in Finland, and just couple months ago participated in a 50ish player sci-fi combat scenario larp. Going to run a (non-combat) cyberpunk game for approx. 35 people in January. Twice. In one weekend.

It really depends on what laser tag equipment you buy.

What would you suggest? If there was a cheap and well-working alternative to high-speed plastic I might well go for it, for indoor use.
