It's incredible how badly Nerf screwed up with their swords.
All that effort to design, distribute, and market a foam weapon, and they ended up missing out on a big expansion to their potential audience by making the weapons unsafe.
I wish the media would report on the commercial success or failure of products like this the way they do about movie takings. I have no idea if the Nerf swords were profitable. I don't know how well they sold to kids, maybe they were a popular stocking-filler.
But I do know that if the weapons had been safe for larp use, they would have been
more
profitable, perhaps significantly more.
I agree whole heartedly. Out of that entire weapon line they had only the big axe and teh big mace seemed almost larp worthy. The rest sucked. and now I see the axe and mace are not on teh shelves. for whatever reason.

Why don't you (on behalf of Shade's Larplist) contact NERF and tell them about it. I just bet you could get a hold of the manager and speak with him.

Now that's just silly. I bet as soon as they hear the word LARP they will probably laugh on the phone and then hang up. *shrugs* Even though there are several companies who do make larp worthy weapons. Calimacil is a good one. But I don;t think Nerf really cares about that.

The Nerf sword instructions specifically tell the user not to hit people with it. They're pretending it's just for waving around and posing, probably for liability reasons.
So, any conversation with them about how the weapons could be improved to be used in larp may be quite Kafkaesque, as they may continue with the lie that the weapons aren't intended for combat.

Considering how incredibly crappy NERF's line of swords and such are for LARPing, it's a lost cause.
Heck, they managed a decent LARP-useful crossbow at one point, and even javelins (both did quite nicely with a bit of paint)...and then stopped selling both entirely. If they actually managed a line of reasonably safe gear, it might actually sell decently. If they can sell LARP stuff in the supermarkets of Nordic countries, why not here in the US?
