TITLE: Screw It, I'll Play Make Believe
A Film By Briana Young
FULL SYNOPSIS
The world of live-action role-playing (LARP) is one of performance, storytelling, gaming strategy and, most importantly, social interaction. There are no game controllers, no boards, no dice. Filmmaker Briana Young offers a playful and enrapturing look at this thoroughly immersive activity that for some is a cathartic release, and for others a means of escape, but for everyone who chooses to commit the time and expense of doing it, LARPing is addictive fun that allows fully grown adults to engage in the magical realm of make- believe--a place that, as we all age, becomes increasingly less accessible. Young explores this subculture by following two different role-playing groups--a theater-style group improv-ing through a Lost- type story of an island wedding gone awry, and a combat-style group enacting an epic battle between elves, humans and orcs. Though the two are distinctive in their approach, Young identifies here not only what unifies their experiences, but reveals the universal human needs that LARPing can satisfy.

Saw this the other day on IFC. Not a bad little film.
It would be a really cool reality show/documentary series if someone could film the daily life and times of a LARP group.
If the filmmaker kept the cost down to handheld cameras and simple tripods with the availability of HD cameras these days.
It would also be cool to give the different players in the game a camera for themselves or take their footage from their cell phones and such.
The drama and soap opera of some LARPs would be media gold.
I think that one day someone is going to make the right LARP documentary and be in the right place at the right time.
A reality show about LARPs would be so cheap to produce as all you would have to do is walk out and start filming. The thing is even after it had it's run in television it could continue as a webcast for many years afterwards. _________________ I know the pieces fit! I watched them fall away! |

I remember two different films. One was about a kid who got involved with Empire of Adria. A group I used to be in. And know some of the people in the film itself. And one about a chapter from either NERO or Larp alliance. Not really a great film. But showed what can go right and what can go wrong in a larp. _________________ Just when you thought the worse was over. Here I am. :0) |

[quote="jieran"]that's the crux of my idea as investors would probably be a lot more into a medieval retreat as opposed to a "live action role playing theme park!"
Well if you look at it. a Medieval retreat would still be a LARP theme park. _________________ Just when you thought the worse was over. Here I am. :0) |
