A few years ago some friends and I registered our LARP here on Shade's list in the hopes of breaking away from the usual games here in the Michigan area. We found that we ran into a lot of the same problems that our predecessors had, namely that there were too few choices in camps or parks in which to run our little game and thus is never grew from more than a gathering of a handful of friends.
Years later and more LARPs than we can count we find ourselves out of college and coming back to that same dilemma wondering if there isn't something we can do about it. Three of us have banded together, built our business plan and stand on the precipice...
What if you didn't have to fight for a camp ground, battling scout troops and art camps? If you could better afford the grounds you are LARPing on because you aren't paying for a group of a hundred when you only have thirty or forty (and potentially put what you've saved back into the game). If you didn't have to LARP in places where the public could stumble into your battle and break flow. If you didn't have to worry month-to-month whether or not your camp will still be available for your use.
We want to provide a haven, a place where LARPs can come and know it is LARPing we are dedicated to, that the people they are renting from understand their needs. Not only that, but a place they can return to for indoor RPG, card, and war games and purchase supplies for where ever their interests lie.
We want to know if you are a GM, DM, Storyteller, host or even just a player, would you move your role play or card games to such a store/facility?
While we value every opinion please keep in mind that this would be based in Michigan as stated above. |

It sounds like an incredible idea if you watch your budget. It would work if you keep the place alive with many kinds of events. I have seen a few game and comic shops "make" their bussiness by having tournements and such. Now add LARPing and wow what a combination. Now my question is what kind of floorspace do you have indoors to run a LARP? Do you have pictures of this place? Is there at least a basic website? I would also suggest to provide and offer food and drink as well. I think it sounds like a fantastic idea if managed well. _________________ I know the pieces fit! I watched them fall away! |

As part of the plan we aren't setting on any one site or building, seeing as by the time we get our loans and investments it might not be there. I've always been so bad about getting my heart set on things.
The building we have in mind is 20,000 sqf. on 3 acres. Only 2,000 sqf. is office space/convertible store space leaving the rest for indoor gaming. Nothing but open warehouse as far as the eye can see, heh.
We have plans for vending machines at the least and a small concession at best.
There are two LARPs headed by myself and a good friend of ours that are already set to start once the store is up and running, and another looking to head the card tournaments. All I'm really lacking is someone versed in Warhammer.
As for a website, we're waiting to have at least the land before we begin our website and marketing. |

Awesome!
If the floorspace is high enough you could actually have multiple levels of dungeons/forest/towns. Make the LARPing floor basically a huge twisted setting. Like for example The Lost City or the house from The Sword mission from the PC Game Thief the Dark Age. The 20000 sq ft with multiple levels can make hundres of thousands of square feet. The concepts are endless. _________________ I know the pieces fit! I watched them fall away! |

Okay, now THAT sounds cool. If I ever take a vacation to Michigan, I am definitely checking to see if you're running. _________________ "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit." - Aristotle (so... apply that to LARPers.) |

The old, OLD NERO chapter in NYC had to do quite a lot with indoor space alone. It wasn't great for long events, but for one-shot adventures you could do quite decently. That sounds like a LOT more room. Also, consider renting the space to airsoft/paintball style groups. More income and crossover.
And yes, dedicated space helps. Just a note- if you want them to even have more appeal, have rentable storage space. Not having to lug stuff around is a big plus for a LARP that wants to use your spot for events. Even if it means setting up some storage sheds on the outside of your main building.
Bonus: Laundry facilities. If you can find surplus industrial-sized washer/dryers from a laundromat that's going out of business, you have a eager audience right there.
Double bonus: "Bar" facility that looks generic enough to be easily dressed up. If you feed them, they will come. |

But did this ever happen? I've been thinking something similar in Seattle, and wonder how this went (or why it didn't). _________________ https://www.facebook.com/westlandslarp |
