i'm getting ready to play with a local larp that does not allow boffers to be made with blue camp foam. all weapons must have a pvc core, wrapped in 3/4" closed-cell foam, and a single layer of duct-tape. open-cell foam is acceptable for use on the striking surfaces, as long as the other requirements are met.
my question is, how the heck can i taper the blade edge of a boffer sword so it looks more like a sword, and less like a round pipe covered in foam? i've been scouring the web for days now and almost everything i can find is on creating shaped weapons with blue camping foam pads, or the simple round boffers...
i've tried to shape it with ducttape and all i end up with is squished foam... |

| Well, you could get a saw blade and shape it down? Then cover with tape and profit. |

Weather stripping. Seriously.
That, plus a little contrast in tape to form a false "blade" and you'll be looking a lot better off. |

Heh. That's actually the work of a local foam-worker, Doug Goldberg. But when it comes to straight-up PVC-tape-and-foam stuff, he's as good as I think it gets. But here ya go, more examples of his work.
Hopefully useful examples that'll help you make boffer weapons that don't look like total garbage. |
