I'll definately let you know! Lol as far as right now weather has been kind of a pain in our necks. Yesterday I had the group go through a filler thing which is something I have them do when I have nothing plan but we come together for the purpose of LARP'ing. Unfortunately the group didn't get very far.

A few problems arose within the past few days..

1.) I just realized I need a female crew member who would willingly dress up as a pig and swing a "human leg" as a weapon...
2.) I need arrow shafts to make arrows to shoot people. Yeaaa... Doesn't sound like a safe idea
3.) don't want to switch venues yet... Actually don't want to at all

There are groups who use padded arrows in combat. Dagorhir is one of them. But if you are going to use bows and arrows in the game. You have to be very safe and have safety checks. Make sure the arrows are safe etc.

Hmm interesting. I had planned on padding the arrows extensively but I'm worried that if the padding isn't done properly then it would severely cripple the flight of the arrows therefore giving me useless arrows unless I fix them and do a damn good job of it

Dag uses good arrows. many groups use good arrows. It all comes down how you construct them.

What I've done since last I typed things:

I bought fake little things made out of plastic (3 fake sticks of dynamite, a Halloween scythe, and a fake dagger and some grayish face paint for a monster) purposes of monsters and other players to use, some day. The scythe needs some adjustments, such as length. And it needs foam put on it... Shouldn't be too tough.

Tested my recurve bow strength... Someone in the group said I shouldn't bother putting foam on the tips, that a full draw from my bow with blunt tipped arrows would only hurt a lot but wouldn't pierce (my face when xD then o.o... Because he was talking seriously) since I do not want lawsuits and dead bodies and jail time... Arrows are still going be padded later on when I find proper materials, aka just latex based paint, which is proving difficult to find for me... Maybe because I don't like to ask questions...

Made more monsters, and set up a new side thing for the group to do for today (the second of September).

Decided I'm going to spend more money today!!! For the purpose of larping and making things interesting for everyone... I'm such a kind organizer I don't have people waste their hard earned cash, I just waste every cent of my own, and let people freely smack each other in my back yard :,) makes me more and more proud each time they smack each other... And its funny throwing a curve ball at them with the stuff I buy. Their reactions are always priceless.

Whoever told you not to padd your arrows is a total moron. Do NOT listen to that idiot and just pad your arrows. Safety should come first. Evil or Very Mad

That is my number one standard is safety first. Which is why I told him we'll use the arrows when I get them padded. Safety is always important for me I want everyone to leave without having a new hole in them

Be careful with this, it can become a trap. Many games start this way, but then it becomes unsupportable in the longer term. You feel all generous at first, but the players can start to take it for granted and then you just feel used.

Most games progress to a "user pays" model where game runners attempt to not lose money on each event by asking for contributions from players. It may save you some frustration if you try to get some of the players buying their own stuff early, and start accounting for what you're spending now and consider asking for coin contributions at each event, with an eye to not spending so much money that it becomes a burden to you.

Yeah I mostly buy the small things that really matter like props and creature props for people to have fun with. Mostly everyone buys their own personal stuff. Like their weapons and other stuff like nerf guns and such.

Wilson. Nerf swords are the worst things you could use. Most of them have so little padding you can feel the core on them. Evil or Very Mad

Something you're going to learn is that fake weapons you get out of a Halloween store don't stand up to people hitting them. Really. Even with foam on them. Learn the how-to's on making boffers and such and use them- they're a cheap, easily made standard that people have been fighting with in the US for decades. Don't buy the Nerf toy weapons, either. Again, those things aren't actually made for what a weapon goes through at a LARP- underpadded and fragile. They're made for kids playing knights. Not LARPers.

From experience- if it's over 35lbs pull, it's too much for even padded arrows- and even then, you need to restrict draws at close range. Unlike the melee weapons, Nerf actually makes something reasonable for bows- the Big Bad Bows don't make bad physreps for archery on a budget, and those arrows are utterly safe. Heck, people have made honest-to-goodness crossbows using them.

Case in point:

Last thing I saw from Nerf that came anywhere close to almost being larp quality was their axe and Maxe. But I think they discontinued making them. Not sure. And haven't tried them in a larp situation. If anyone has done that. Let us know. I know majority of the swords Nerf made really sucked. And definately do not recommend use in any larp event.

It's incredible how badly Nerf screwed up with their swords.

All that effort to design, distribute, and market a foam weapon, and they ended up missing out on a big expansion to their potential audience by making the weapons unsafe.

I wish the media would report on the commercial success or failure of products like this the way they do about movie takings. I have no idea if the Nerf swords were profitable. I don't know how well they sold to kids, maybe they were a popular stocking-filler.

But I do know that if the weapons had been safe for larp use, they would have been more profitable, perhaps significantly more.
