I see my favorite evil elf is on the poster. Very nice. Too bad I am not there to be a part of that. _________________ Just when you thought the worse was over. Here I am. :0) |

It's true. With about 7000 participants at the 2010 event, ConQuest of Mythodea is by far the biggest larp event in the world. It's in Germany.
I think the next largest event is Drachenfest, with maybe 5000 participants, which is also in Germany. |

We truly need a mass larp event like that here. I knwo SCA has an event. Dag has event. Adria has wars. But just not the same as the ones in europe. _________________ Just when you thought the worse was over. Here I am. :0) |

No kidding, BaronBlackRose. Have you tried to organize a mass event? A friend of mine has thought about a mass fantasy combat event, but honestly there's the lingering feeling that no one will show up because of the 'competition' between larps. Who knows until you try, though.
That being said, he did do a zombie survival game that saw 120 ppl which was the largest larp event in the area that I know of yet. Maybe it has to do with genre to generate enough interest, at least in the States...? _________________ Club Crimson: a Vampire Nerf game - http://www.biomechine.net/clubcrimson/

Not really sure. All I knwo is there's a underlining jealousy amongst american larp groups. And then you have outright hatred for eachother. Example Alliance and NERO. Although not sure if it still exists. But I have been wrong before. I just think it could happen if actually tried. But I have seen Mass larp events try to come here. Only to fail due to these jealousy's amongst the groups and hatred for eachother. And of course the all mighty legal redtape as well. I tried. Got no interest whatsoever. Then this was before the massive use of internet like it is now. Back then it was mainly BBS's.. I didn;t use the internet back then. It was word of moputh and by snail mail. _________________ Just when you thought the worse was over. Here I am. :0) |

dagorhir's ragnarok draws between 1500-1800 people.
SCA's Pennsic war averages 10,000 people a year, it has to register a city here in PA. If you count SCA as a LARP then this would be the biggest. |

I never have nor will I ever see SCA as a larp. It is a history recreation group. They also hold a special non profit tag. I forget the name of it at the moment like Empire of Adria does. Might be the biggest medieval recreation event in teh world. It's not Larp in my eyes or history recreation folks. _________________ Just when you thought the worse was over. Here I am. :0) |

I see the SCA as LARP - eventhough the difference between a person's persona and themselves is very thin, if at all, I also find the same thing at many 'full blooded' LARPs. In fact, I see every historical recreation as a type of LARP, even if they refuse to acknowledge it. The attendees play a role and they 'act' it out - ergo Live Action Roleplaying.
Of course, when I hear LARP though, the SCA is the last thing on my list. |

I agree, See the basic and most important element is there, they assume a role and play it |

Then by what you said. Professional sports are Larps as well. Sweet. I'll make sure to make some signs that say Tom Brady is Lord Brady Lord of the ball of foot!!! after all he is assuming the role of Quarter back.. *shrug* Just a thought. But in my mind I don;t see SCA, Empire of Adria include any history recreation. Living history and history reenactment group out there as a larp. _________________ Just when you thought the worse was over. Here I am. :0) |

There's a difference between some people calling Tom Brady Lord Brady and John Smith of San Diego, CA calling himself "Arranon of Careleon, Spanish explorer from 13th century Europe" and then dressing himself up in said garb and interacting with others who do the same thing, attending court, fighting in wars against neighboring kingdoms and so on.
Like I said it is a stretch but IMO no moreso than that of Amtgard whose only difference from the SCA seems to be they allow spellcasting and use boffers. |

I guess it really comes down to who thinks what. But honestly whne someone who reasearches their persona and teh century they lived in. To teh clothes they wore and what they did and what they ate. Calling them a larper would seem insulting in some fashion or another. When I did live role playing. It wasn't based off actual physical history. But anyways.
As far as Dag's Ragnarok goes. I copnsider that to be the biggest LArp event in North america I think. Despite it's lack in teh roleplaying aspect of it Although they do have some characters in it. But does live up to the Live Action aspect though. _________________ Just when you thought the worse was over. Here I am. :0) |
