The following event is currently in development, and we are definately open for suggestions and comments!

I am the assistant cast director at a small Renaissance festival in Hillsboro, Texas called Middlefaire. On the first weekend of November, we are going to be holding a one weekend fantasy festival and during that weekend we are going to do a test run of a LARP event akin to a Civil War re-enactment (but medieval and fantasy). Our inspiration for this event is from reading about all of the wonderful looking European LARP events.

Our concept is to pit two factions against each other in a massive melee several times a day with spectators watching from the sidelines. The two factions are the barbaric/brutal/primitive cultures, and the civilized and trained city dwellers. Combat will mainly be melee, but there will be the limited capibility for archers (there will be a maximum for each faction).

The event will be comfortably priced (participants pre-registerring will be paying for two nights of camping and dinner, and will get admission to the festival for free as well as the battles).

Those that are interested in participating in this event, especially those that want to help us with input and suggestions, will need to get in touch with me via here (or email at clayton@terabites.com, please put "Battle of Middlefaire" in the subject line). Within the next week, we will have a Yahoo group for this event, and will soon have a website for registerring for the actual event.

If this event works well, we are thinking of giving it it's own designated weekend instead of pairing it with a festival we are already running (which will give us more capability to do different things during the event).

Looking forward to getting this event planned and having it be sucessful!

Clayton Jackson
Assistant Cast Director of Middlefaire.

Legend Realms here in San Antonio would like to be a part of this event. If you have any specific cast needs or just bodies we would like to help out! I know the Middlefaire site and its a nice one! Would love to use it for Legend Realms LARP but a little far away!

@Eldrad: No worries about not being able to go. I'm thinking that if we had about 100 LARPing participants, that it will probably be considered a success and we'll do it as it's own event and hopefully you'll be able to attend a future one!

@bobtheogre: We're welcoming people from all games and combat types. The current thought is to use a combat system similar to Amtgard, Dagorhir, and HFS (Hit to the limb, loose the limb; Hit to a second limb, you're dead.), but I'm more thinking about working towards using weapons more suitable for NERO (Calimacil, Forgotten Dreams, Iron Fortress, Eagle Flex, etc.)

One thing to note that I did not mention earlier. We're not going to be garb nazis and want everything to be look really authentic and good. The garb requirements for characters will be very simple, and sometimes very minimal (while staying family friendly) and easily creatable.

I'll be creating the Yahoo group for the battle tomarrow and will post again with the address for this yahoo group.

I have just created the Yahoo group for the battle, designed for communications about the game, and to get input on how we are going to develop it.

The website address is http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/Middlefaire_LARP/

To respond to wolfdruid67, we'd definately love to have your group come and participate! Smile

I will be glad to give any assistance and advice in your rules. So far you have it very simple so a LARGE gathering will not have delays in rule arguments.

If you get 100 people at your event then you're a LARP genius.

You just might make this happen as you have a freaking Ren Fest to Site to play on! Makes me wanna go!

Here are a few free ideas.

My suggestion is to get on the net and find every RPG game shop for 200 miles in every direction and send them some fliers and ask them to put them out.

Also get online and contact every LARP, SCA Group and Theater Group that you and your team can find. Heck we most likely have them listed here.

For the Gamers have a flier that post it as a LARP, for the Theater People have a flier that has it as a giant interactive theater and Renaissance/Folk music fest.

Try and hit up the local Arts and Humanities groups in an area.

Make the campsite very LARPer friendly. Have fire pits ready and the campsites in order. Keep everyone entertained. Have security/Town Guard to keep everyone friendly.

Might wanna be careful about the SCA. In my days dealing with them LArpwise. They would thumb their nose at you. And use phrases like Mambi pambi. Over all I like your suggestions though. Makes me want to be at this event. \m/ Twisted Evil \m/

LOL..the SCA did that to us as well....said we were not real fighters...and used a game system to make up for our lack of skill. Then 4 of my warriors and battle mages fought with them and beat the hell out of them. They, for some reason, do not have a problem with us anymore. LOL

Yes many of the SCA are "Rattan Wielding Dogmatist" but without a doubt, but they can sometimes throw kick ass events with great costumes have great ideas and skills.

It's kinda funny that when I was in the SCA, my main problem was the lack of LARPing. Many of their events were sitting around being bored unless you were a fighter.

Regardless if a few hundred people on the field show up to fight and it looks like the link below everybody will be impressed.

This is my thoughts on having people from the SCA participate. Yes, we will let them participate if they want. But, they will have to realize that this is a *fantasy LARP* event, and they should be prepared to throw their "garb nazi" concepts out the window for that weekend, as well as being prepared to fight with boffer weapons. [There are even some of the more controversial groups in the SCA I think would be perfect for this event, not going to name any of them though.]
