Folks we are on the cusp of a deluge of linkspammers. Is there a way that the common user, such as you or I, can take action when one posts to the forum? How can we report a user?
Thanks! |

As a web dev myself, the battle against spammers is ongoing.
I'm not sure who manages this site, but I would recommend starting by upgrading php-nuke to the latest version.
The forums might be problematic to upgrade because they are integrated into php-nuke and unless I am mistaken, php-nuke only uses phpbb2, which has security flaws that spammers exploit. Phpbb is now up to version 3.0.6, which may not be compatible with php-nuke. I have not done any research on this, but I did used to use php-nuke and know that its database structure is the same as phpbb2 to allow for integration.
I would also recommend replacing the captcha image (the verification code that you have key in every time you log in) if at all possible with ReCaptcha or some other upgraded version. The current captcha used on this site has been compromised by spammers quite some time ago.
Having said all that, the task of upgrading a site like this can be monumental considering the plug-ins, integrated gallery and forums, and the expansive amount of information. But I'm sure that the php-nuke website has plenty of information on how to stop spammers in their system.
And all this pain because of spammers....by the gods do I loathe them. _________________ Club Crimson: a Vampire Nerf game - http://www.biomechine.net/clubcrimson/

I've let Shade know about the concern and pointed him to this thread.
In the meanwhile, I'll carry on cleaning up spam as I see it. |

Sorry I've been absent. I appreciate your help on this Ryan. Since the other moderators have not been around recently, I've added additional people as moderators.
As for the website, I've been working on an updated larplist on a new server. I have just been too busy to finish it up. I guess I'll have to step up on finishing the new website... or maybe retire.
Thanks for your support.

Shade please don't retire. I knwo it's going to be hard work to clean up all the broken links from defunct larp groups. But I think it is well worth the effort in the end. _________________ Just when you thought the worse was over. Here I am. :0) |

Don't retire Shade.
Save people that should be LARPers from the living death that I go through in life everyday, being born a LARPer but finding out about the whole LARP thing too late in life and not being able to EVER do it due to life (or wife) itself. _________________ I know the pieces fit! i don't know the spam your getting is it on pills, and porn sites, . there are many exploits for forum script like this one and you can pick up marketing software that will allow it to attack forums. when i put up my forum it was almost instant that i was getting attack, but just by applying a questionnaire on sign up the once you have to fill in the answer is the best way to get rid of the spammers well the once regarding to the software which are the ones dominating the attacks. the once that have to manually enter those are easily to pick out. your not alone that is for sure. they even have scripts to hack into word press.
here is great helping site.

| I am 96% certain that Dr. Know is a linkspammer using keywords to produce what seem to be valid messages but really aren't. How can I report him? |
